Understanding Aging Skin Through the Years

My last blog focused on aging skin and the makeup we should and shouldn't use to enhance those changes. Today I would like to get down to the anatomy of aging skin so we can understand this inevitable process. Keep in mind that there are many other factors that contribute to changes in our skin such as smoking, diet, hydration and environmental factors. Some we can change and others we can't.

Skin "Through The Years" Chart

Let's take a look at our skin through the years. The following chart explains what is happening to the collagen and elastin in our skin. These are the structures of the skin that maintain both elasticity and firmness. Notice the top layer, the epidermis. As we age and the collagen and elastin break down, the skin becomes thinner and fine lines appear. As we age, these fine lines become wrinkles.



While this process happens through decades of our life, we can be pro-active in taking care of our skin by making small changes that affect aging skin.

Factors Affecting Aging Skin

Now that we understand how fine lines and wrinkles form, let's take a look at other factors that have an effect on aging skin. The following diagram lists some of the environmental factors and areas of our skin they target. As you can see there are so many things that affect the largest organ in our body, the skin.

As a young girl, I can remember my grandmother letting me use her powder and "rouge". It made me feel so grown up. Of course at that age, my skin was clear and smooth.  Now as I close in on the age of 60, I realize that powder is really not my friend. 7 SINS FOR SKIN #7 Sleep Positions

The way you sleep can increase the appearance of wrinkles. Side sleeping can cause deep lines and creases on your chin and cheeks, which you naturally return to each night.  Let's face it, gravity takes over as our skin ages and loses elasticity. Side sleepers usually notice vertical lines down their chin and cheeks.

Sleeping face down can create lines on your forehead. When your face is directly on the pillow, there is increased pressure and friction on the forehead that eventually leads to wrinkles.  Not to mention the direct contact your skin has with the oils or dust on the pillow.  This could lead to acne or other skin blemishes. 

Sleeping on your back is the best way to prevent lines and wrinkles. There is no friction on the skin and no contact with dirt and oils on the pillow. One suggestion if you are a back sleeper. Don't sleep completely flat. Elevate your head to discourage fluid from collecting around the eyes, giving a puffy appearance in the morning.  Other than that, sleeping on your back is the best position to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles on your face.

7 SINS FOR SKIN #5 FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

The 15,000 facial expressions you make every day can damage skin. Frowning, smiling, squinting—the constant movement of facial muscles causes skin fibers to slacken. Over time, these creases become wrinkles.

Many facial expressions show how we are feeling. Smiling...we are happy, frowning...sad, squinting...stressed or thinking about something, eyes wide open...shock or worry. They all show our expressions of how we feel inside. These are inevitable emotions that we sometimes cannot control. So what do we do about it?? If you find yourself frowning a lot, find something that makes you happy and will make you smile more. If you find yourself squinting, relax your facial muscles or wear your sunglasses. 

Facial muscles can be trained just like any other muscle in the body. Here's my "double" advice, not as an Avon rep, but as someone with physical therapy background. Training your facial muscles is as easy as saying the vowels. Stand in front of a mirror, and exaggerate the vowels x 10 reps. You will be making funny faces at yourself and will be smiling more by the end of the exercise! Then cleanse your face and apply moisturizer. The perfect prescription.

7 SINS FOR SKIN #3 Stress and Lack of Sleep

Stress and lack of sleep can lead to dryness, sensitivity, acne, excess oil or lackluster skin.  

Exercise

We all have stressors in our daily lives. It's how we deal with them that help us combat what stress can do to our overall health.  Getting enough exercise can help boost the circulation and release endorphins that make us feel good. The increase in blood flow helps wash away toxins that clog our pores, allowing for more radiant looking skin.

Relax

This is probably the hardest thing for most of us to do. We are all so busy with family, work, school, shopping, carpooling and the list goes on. When is there time to relax? Well, we have to make time to improve our health and overall look of our skin. Try to slow down, take some breaks throughout the day, and don't take things so seriously.  There is also meditation, deep breathing and just taking some quiet time alone to help us relax. 

Sleep

Getting enough restorative sleep is vital to give your skin time to repair and rejuvenate. A good night's rest limits the release of cortisol, a harmful hormone released when we are stressed. Cortisol can cause harmful things to happen in the body including accumulating fat or making your skin very dry, oily, wrinkled or full of acne. Get about 7 hours of sleep a night for healthy stress-free radiant looking skin.

Tips for Youthful Looking Skin

Create New Habits for Youthful Looking Skin

As we age, our skin loses collagen, elastin and facial fat. We can't stop this process and unfortunately, it shows on our faces first.

Here's a few helpful ideas that we can do daily to slow up the process. 

1.  Create a nightly skin care habit. 

Before your head hits the pillow, make sure you remove all your makeup. Going to bed with all your makeup, and the days worth of dirt and oil, results in clogged pores and possibly acne.  Here's a good daily routine to follow and my Avon suggestions. 

*Remove makeup

*Cleanse your face

2.  Use Sunscreen

Stock up and use at least SPF15. Most moisturizers and foundations have sunscreen already in them. If you don't use these products, make sure you use another form of sunscreen lotion or cream any time you are exposed to the sun.

I love sharing information about skin care and helping others with their skin care concerns.
